Their AI-first engineering approach delivered a unified in-house media platform in under a year, designed to integrate with Databricks and AWS AI models. This effort enables us to eliminate 4 external vendors , reducing complexity and integration overhead, and is projected to save $4M in FY27 , ramping up to $6.2M annually by FY28 . Additionally, the live-streaming features of the Nike Media Platform bring consumers real-time content from our athletes and producers, delivering new ways to connect to sport at scale and cost. Last week's Tech Treat Tuesday featured three exciting presentations that showcased innovative solutions to simplify the developer experience and drive adoption of new technologies. Our presenters, James Michael , Matt Eggers , and Shawn Hughes , shared their expertise and passion for improving the way developers work.

Simplifying Repository Settings with NDX Coach

James Michael kicked off the session by demonstrating the NDX Coach app, a game-changing tool for managing repository settings across an organization. With NDX Coach, administrators can set rules and enforce them, preventing developers from bypassing them. James showed how the app can be used to configure and enforce settings such as pull request approvals, repository visibility, and branch permissions. He also highlighted the app's ability to scan for vulnerabilities and prevent changes to certain settings. By simplifying the management of repository settings, NDX Coach ensures consistency across the organization and frees up developers to focus on what matters most - writing code.

Streamlining Deployment with Sole/Databricks Platform

Next up, Matt Eggers presented the Sole/Databricks Platform Deployment, a solution designed to simplify the deployment process for developers. Matt demonstrated how the platform uses a claims-based system to manage repository settings and workflows, making it easier for developers to deploy applications without worrying about the underlying infrastructure. He showed how the platform can provision runners and workflows, and how it can be used to deploy to different environments. By enforcing consistency across deployments and ensuring that best practices are followed, the Sole/Databricks Platform Deployment streamlines the deployment process and reduces errors.

Shawn Hughes wrapped up the session by emphasizing the importance of storytelling in driving patterns and adoption of new products and features. He shared his passion for storytelling and how it can be used to drive excitement and clarity around new technologies. Password resets are the single largest driver of Support Desk calls across the industry, and Nike has been no exception. For years, our reset process relied on pre-registration (which was spotty) and relatively weak identity checks, often forcing employees to call the Support Desk instead of resolving issues themselves.

Over the past year, the Enterprise Identity & Access Management (EIAM) and Support Desk (SD) teams have partnered to make significant progress to address this experience from multiple angles – reducing SD calls routed to password resets and adding tools and capabilities to solve password issues without ever having to pick up the phone.

Improving Detection and Troubleshooting Time
The Nike Open-Source Observability Platform (NOOP) team has successfully implemented a new update that enables us to meet our performance Service Level Agreement (SLA) during high-traffic launch events. This update has resulted in a significant performance improvement, reducing detection and troubleshooting time by approximately two-thirds compared to our current solution (Splunk) in China. NIKE Takes Control of Digital Assets

A collaboration between Digital Employee Experience, Global Communications, and Tech Modernization, has enabled NIKE to take full end-to-end control of hosting digital assets on high-traffic websites ( about.nike.com , dna.nike.com , & medialibrary.nike.com). The new in-house asset management platform, Nike Media Platform, built and integrated in just one quarter, delivers better image quality, lower latency, and reduced costs. Cost Savings Through Smart Shipping Controls
The Observability Engineering team, in partnership with SRE, developed a real-time duplicate shipment monitoring dashboard that prevented over 500 duplicate shipments in North America and 1,000+ in EMEA during the holiday season. This technical solution provides immediate visibility into shipping anomalies, allowing teams to intervene proactively. The initiative not only delivered significant cost savings in shipping expenses but also enhanced customer satisfaction by ensuring orders are delivered correctly the first time. Unlocking Efficiency & Alignment: Strengthening Enterprise Architecture
A successfully piloted cross-domain architecture definition process has driven key improvements, including modernization of the Managed Airflow Platform (MAP), enhanced data management through Data Tagging and Classification, and Data Retention Reduction. The initiative also activated an Architecture Decision process, aligning SEC, Finance, and Data Governance domains to enable seamless collaboration and informed business decisions.

Boosting Security with Simpler, Smarter MFA

We've made significant progress in protecting NIKE's security by deploying Okta Verify to devices globally, making it easier for employees to use a more secure and phishing-resistant multifactor authentication (MFA) method. As a result, employees are now using Okta FastPass more often than traditional SMS, ensuring a safer and more streamlined login experience. This achievement helps safeguard NIKE's sensitive information and systems.

Scaling Nike Open Source Observability Platform (NOOP)

Scaled the NOOP platform in China to handle High-heat launches, including the Travis Scott launch which produced up to 3Gbps of data ingest. The platform was able to scale and ingest the data with less than 1% data loss. This accelerates Nike’s move to a modern Observability stack and avoids an expensive Splunk contract extension in May 2025.

Accelerating Innovation: New GenAI Capability
Delivered Generative AI platform capabilities, empowering CP&I teams to create demo solutions. Achieved cross-GT and IDSA alignment on traditional AIML migration strategy. Key assets delivered include RAG and ML Training & Serving templates, and a Legal approval framework. This enables Nike to realize benefits of efficiency and scale through the Federated Model and allows for rapid prototyping and enablement of GenAI use cases in Sole, providing significant value to the organization. Modernizing our Technology Ecosystem
In Q2, we successfully delivered 12 divestiture, modernization and optimization opportunities, yielding $3.7M in validated savings. This brings our total to 26 completed projects in 1H, achieving 52% of our FY25 target. By streamlining and modernizing our technology ecosystem, we're achieving greater agility, scalability, and faster time-to-market, ultimately driving business growth and competitiveness for NIKE.

SCPT Accelerates Service Platform Adoption

The Supply Chain & Planning Technology team has made significant progress by migrating 62 services to Nike Platform Engine, with 5 already in production and 57 ready for deployment post-Change Freeze. This migration represents approximately 30% progress toward the annual goal of supporting new services on the Service Platform. By adopting these modernized platform services, NIKE teams will optimize engineering labor costs while gaining access to enhanced features like scheduled jobs, public internet access, and automated scaling capabilities. Simplifying Database Management: A Win for NIKE Engineers

Delivered new products built on control plane tools provided by Nike Runtime Foundation (Service Platform), enabling Nike engineers to build and manage compliant databases. Data Management Technology Foundation (DMTF) platform now supports four database types: OpenSearch, RDS MySQL, DynamoDB, and MemoryDB using Managed Database Deployment Services. This allows our engineers to focus on building innovative tools and solutions, while our team handles the behind-the-scenes work of keeping DMTF databases up-to-date and compliant. Streaming Ahead: NSP3 Migration Success
We've achieved a major milestone in our efforts to modernize our streaming platform, migrating or deleting 948 streams and reducing our NSP 1 footprint by 15%. Over 50 teams across Nike came together over two days to participate in our first Sole Hackathon to foster learning and innovation. Using Databricks Sole , Nike's platform for machine learning models, data, and product steams, teams focused their innovation on topics such as Paris Olympics, "Winning Isn’t for Everyone" Ad Campaign, and AF1 vs Dunks. They created 52 tables, 10 Genie AI Rooms and 8,491 queries at less than $0.01 per query. Some participating teams are taking their learnings back to their domains for production launches!

The NSP 3 in-real-time- workshop is coming to EMEA! Register now for ELC, September 10 or EHQ, September 11 . Nike Streaming Platform 3 (NSP 3) is a near real-time data streaming platform that makes it easy to build data pipelines and streaming applications at scale.

CPI, in close partnership with the EADP AIML team, leveraged out-of-the-box capabilities and platform templates to develop their first POC retrieval augmented generation (RAG) application. Launched V0 of Nike Open Source Observability Platform (NOOP) in Greater China
Launched roadshow in GC to showcase platform capabilities to generate enthusiasm and drive adoption. Features include: role based access control, gRPC, a modern open source high performance Remote Procedure Call (RPC) framework, and Okta integration. We're making progress on integrating Application Performance Metrics (APM) and Distributed Tracing telemetry, as well as conducting production load testing to ensure the platform is ready for the holiday season. We are also actively working with teams and users to migrate away from New Relic, as part of our efforts to deprecate this tool.

New OKTA based Employee Password Reset/Unlock App to Enable More Efficient Employee Self Service

Implementation of new OKTA Password Reset/Unlock app provides employees with an improved integrated experience and allows for higher employee self service. This is expected to reduce the Help Desk password reset tickets from 4K monthly to 2K monthly and save the employee and the Help Desk ~40 minutes per incident. The Help Desk labor savings are projected at roughly $500K/year. The move to OKTA will also allow the divestiture Hitachi solution and will reduce the solutions in use and standardize on OKTA for the SSO use cases.

Increased Adoption of Near Real Time Data and Improved User Experience

We increased Nike Streaming Platform (NSP 3) adoption by adding 1,040 streams in June and July to a total of 2,522 streams. This will enable a shared marketplace and providing a scalable and collaborative ecosystem to produce and consume data near real-time. We also rolled out several key features allowing smoother migration for customers who have multiple consumers and critical business workflows, automated credentialing for faster service, improved notifications for monitoring and observability, and improved platform stabilization, among other updates. NSP is a Tech Solution within Near Real-Time Data Platform (NRTD) , enabling streams for data integration, messaging and stream processing for all of Nike.

We are thrilled to announce that the latest version of Nike Streaming Platform (NSP 3) is now available for adoption, bringing scalability and resiliency with a click of the mouse. NSP is a Tech Solution within Near Real-Time Data Platform (NRTD) , enabling streams for data integration, messaging and stream processing for all of Nike. NRTD also drove ~$2.5M in savings in FY24 through various cost optimization initiatives.

Observability Platform Modernization

Divested of Multiple Platforms and Tooling Saving ~$15M and Simplifying Developer Experiences

The Observability Team, in partnership with CIS, moved to the Enterprise standard logging platform Splunk, resulting in $12M cost savings over FY24/25 . They also divested of BigPanda, a redundant tooling in the event management space. This unlocked opportunity to use ML based analysis which will significantly free up L1/L2 support team capacity and result in cost savings in FY25. Additionally, the team divested of Sluice, a redundant log data pipeline, and moved to Cribl, resulting in $1.5M savings in FY24/25 and right sized NewRelic contracts, saving $1.5M and avoiding a $6M price increase by going through RFP.

Through remarkable teamwork and collaboration across EADP, Global Technology and Nike Business, we have successfully decommissioned DOMO and migrated to a Nike-managed, custom solution that aligns to our broader simplification goals.

In six months, we developed two major in-house products, Store Performance Reporting (SPR) and Athlete Productivity App (APA), to simplify our technology stack and streamline Nike's data ecosystem.

Store Performance Reporting (SPR): This in-house solution includes Tableau, Metric Insights, and Databricks, serving a total of 660 stores and ~6,000 active users.

Key Benefits:

SPR empowers all store leaders with iOS and desktop access, providing historical data for two rolling fiscal years.
Territory-level access ensures efficient reporting across geographies.
Ability to enhance and modify the tech stack to keep pace with retail demands.
Reduces cost of ownership by ~$6M YoY by moving in-house.

Athlete Productivity App (APA):
APA measures individual athlete productivity in stores, tracking times and quantities related to back-of-house operational tasks.

Key Benefits:

Empowers store leaders and athletes by optimizing payroll and improving efficiency through gamification.
By developing APA.v2 internally, we anticipate enduring cost savings.

Can you share a little bit about your team and the work that you do?

I work in Service Platform, where the mission is to provide solutions to standardize the way that Foundational, Core, and Experience platform teams deploy software to the cloud. Our goal is to reduce GT teams’ time-to-market, lower RTO and cloud costs, and dramatically increase Nike’s software agility.

Did you always know that working in technology was what you wanted to do?

I graduated with a degree in Computer Science – so I didn't change career paths. I don’t feel like there has been one "big" thing that pushed my career in any direction. It was more that my determination has brought me to where I am today (and it hasn’t always been easy as a female in the male-majority world of IT).

Favorite Nike memories?

I really enjoy all after-work activities, like JDI, holiday parties, etc., where I can really get to know people from different teams. Learning about their passions, exchanging views on various topics — I believe it makes the work more enjoyable. Especially when we are so focused on our tasks daily, it can be hard to get in touch with people from other teams.

What excites you about being in Global Technology and GAP specifically?

Working on innovations and foundation platforms so our customers can achieve fast time-to-market and cost-effective solutions.

GAP was one of the first Global Technology functions to expand to Poland back in 2019. What have been some of the biggest lessons as the GAP PTC teams have grown and matured?

There is no growth without a good manager — the lack of one leads to an overloaded team. Having someone in PTC helped us to set boundaries and cooperate better across time zones. Engineers definitely prefer to focus on development, so if managers can help clear the path, we’re all for it!

What up-and-coming technology are you most passionate about?

I believe sustainability is going to have a huge impact at Nike. Technology has the potential to be a game changer in the global fight against climate change and environmental degradation.

What advice would you give to more junior female engineers considering a career in Nike tech?

I am still working on this, but do not put too much pressure on yourself— you do not need to know everything about everything . Listen, do not be afraid to ask for help/questions, and keep trying. Work collaboratively as a team member.

As part of our FY24 GPaaS objective to "Create a Culture of Engineering," GPaaS held their first ever Hackathon across India, Poland and WHQ. The event proved to be one of innovation and collaboration not only across the organization but across the globe, with several teams demonstrating what they built. Problem-solving ranged from identification of under-utilized EMR and Databricks clusters for cost reduction opportunities – to search/query for Nike products in nearby stores, potentially saving customers time and increasing sales.

All three prioritized divestitures planned for FY24 Q1 delivery are complete! A shoutout to the work, time and effort GT teams put in to divest of GOAL, Cavisson, and Starburst Trino in Q1, resulting in a combined ~$4M savings year-over-year . To continue momentum of divestiture in support of RTO reduction, the Global Platform Center of Excellence (GPCOE) team will kick-off execution of the Simplification Acceleration strategy with all domains in Q2. Simplification acceleration will consist of identifying potential opportunities through contract consolidation, and new opportunities through analysis across all domains.

Nike Direct Overcomes Reporting Challenges, Ensuring Accurate Profit Forecasts in Transition to S/4

SEC needed to solve how to continue to enable comparable reporting based on margin, which enables profit forecasting, as MANA shifts to a new version of Standard Cost. Global Architecture provided a solution by calculating historical cost value on Nike Direct sales in S4.

CX Improvements Mature Cerberus Interface and Elevate the User Experience

Unlocking Cloud Cost Savings Across GT

Partnered with the Cloud FinOps team to conduct technical deep dives with high-spending GT domains, uncovering ~$10M cloud cost savings across Nike. In Q2, the Global Platform Center Of Excellence (GPCOE) team will continue to partner with select domains to identify FY24 Advanced Lever optimization opportunities, a key body of work within Nike’s E2E Cloud Cost Optimization program.

Enabling Athlete Work Scheduling with Legion Workforce Management Integrations (Championship Retail)

Global Architecture teams worked on integrating Legion with UKG, enabling more accurate athlete shift scheduling and calculation of actual hours worked. They also completed a solution design for providing schedule data to the UKG time system and TRACK Reporting solution. By integrating Legion with Workday, they were also able to unlock access to critical data such as employee master data, future dated, and contract hours. In addition, the team provided requirements for user and role provisioning via Workday and implemented OAUTH client credential APIs with Legion for more precise authentication and authorization.

Institutionalizing Platform Ownership through GT Platform Trainings

In Q1, the GPCOE team completed Platform Data Stewardship Trainings for all Nike Platform Owners, accelerating RTO reduction and driving business agility across Nike. This course supports Platform Owners and all of GT with software divestiture planning, avoiding duplication, and quick decision-making based on accurate data, unlocking faster time-to-market. Innovative Solution Resolves Integration Breakdown for Nike's Inbound Shipment Tracking

Architecture’s transitional design effectively addresses the integration breakdown between SAP and ARTA, a critical tool used by Nike's Inbound Logistics Service Providers (LSPs) for tracking shipments. Through key stakeholder collaboration and in-depth sessions, successfully implemented a solution that enables optimized inbound shipment planning and ensures timely delivery of Nike's supply to distribution centers and customers.

Enable QR Outbound Scanning for Converse's Initial China Factory Go-live

Enables the association of fulfilled product (item-level) to its "ship to" destination. CPPE's sensors data acquisition product captures these associations and streams them to Nike's data foundation where brand protection products present information to the business functions to use in operations. The initial Factory activation enables tracking coverage for 10% of all Converse FW. The remaining activations are intended to raise coverage to 100% of all Converse FW in FY24.

BM Inventory Bot is Live

Brick and Mortar (BM) Inventory Bot is Live

The BM Inventory Bot is now live, thanks to a dedicated team of GPaaS and Tech Ops engineers who worked for more than two months to make it a reality. This tool automates the comparison of Stock On Hand (SOH) reports for each Nike Retail Store in order to detect data discrepancies and raise a single ticket in SNOW, which eliminates the need for individual tickets to be manually submitted for those discrepancies. This will save about 1,350 hours per year for the frontline team members, allowing for more quality time for their routine analysis and helping to eliminate human error.

Problem Statement:

A daily report is generated for 9 Geos via Splunk and sent to frontline teams containing inventory details Stock On Hand (SOH) for each Nike Retail store to compare SOH between current day and last three days. In case of discrepancies are found, the frontline team manually raises a ticket for the Retail Production Support (RPS) team with the list of stores for further validation/processing. This is a time-consuming activity and is prone to human errors.

Automation Approach:

The bot downloads the report from Splunk, checks 250+ line items every day, compares the POS and EOD activity of the stores between today and the last three days, The bot checks if the store was opened/closed yesterday using data received from the GROMP tool, and finally raises a ticket in SNOW for discrepancies in the SOH Data.

Business Benefits Delivered:

The expected time in identifying the discrepancies will reduce from ~4.5 average hours saily to ~20 min daily for 300 days in a year. Before this automation, 3-4 frontline team members were manually validating the data daily across 9 geos and coordinating with RPS Team. Now they will have quality time for their routine time and analysis etc Automation will eliminate human errors and help in identifying discrepancies in SOH faster.

Congrats to GAP architects and engineering teams for their incredible focus and synchronized delivery in support of a critical Nike milestone: the Direct-to-Consumer release (Stage 1) of our new Global Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution is officially live in North America!

Over the past 2 years, both Global Architecture and GPaaS teams have played a critical role in this effort. By stitching across platforms and providing integrated architectural designs, Global Architecture enabled fast decision-making and a coordinated offense. GPaaS platforms performed and scaled flawlessly, with a robust coverage plan to support our SEC users.

In collaboration with Planning, Marketplace Supply Chain and more, GAP SEC teams have delivered almost 3,000 units of work, created hundreds of designs and diagrams and engaged in over 300 workshops and design meetings to successfully launch SEC Marketplace Activation North America (MANA) Stage 1. The delivery includes 40 end-to-end business flows and 46 capstone designs, along with around-the-clock Hypercare Support for users.

SEC is a key initiative and system that integrates Nike retail and wholesale systems into one global ERP system and enables the flow of data across it. This core ERP and shared data will enable the company to serve the consumer at speed with supply chain agility and financial transparency. A huge congratulations and thank you to the architect and engineering teams who contributed both on-site and on-call to get us across this first milestone! Next, the team will look ahead to the Integrated Marketplace release (Stage 2) of MANA deployment in 2024 and bringing this new ERP solution to EMEA and APLA. We are excited to highlight Sam Keh - Director, Business Architecture. Her experience with Nike goes back to her first pair of Converse Chuck 70 Vintage Canvas in junior high school. The school required students to wear a white dress shirt, a navy pleated skirt and white sneakers. She decided on Chucks as a way to express herself and her style - plus they were comfortable, and paired up well with the school uniform. During her 13 months at Nike, Sam has made a big impact on the Global Architecture team. Can you share a little bit about your team and the work that you do?

The Business Architecture team consists of seven members including myself. We all possess different skill sets and operational experience with diversified backgrounds. In order to support Nike’s future growth needs, the team's focus is on enhancing the existing business architecture methodology/framework, building the foundational models, formulating change management plans and running pilot programs, in addition to supporting high priority initiatives such as SEC-EMEA and Sustainability.

Did you always know that working in technology was what you wanted to do? How did you decide to go into your field?

No, working in tech nology was a coincidence. My background allows me to operate in both business and technology. Business Architecture was something I discovered accidentally in 2010 while searching for the next career move. Since then, I have been leveraging business architecture knowledge to translate enterprise strategy into bite size, executable programs and projects in a disciplined manner. The experience also led to other career opportunities such as setting up and managing enterprise data management and business applications organizations and leading an enterprise-wide digital transformation initiative.

Is there a professional lesson/accomplishment that has most impacted your career?

Mentorship matters. I was very fortunate to work for an inspirational, empathetic leader at Cisco who later became my mentor and taught me what it takes to be a people leader. It goes beyond goals-setting and performance review. He showed me that when a team is in crisis, leadership and accountability matter. The team needs to know that they have someone who has their backs and willing to put the team ahead of his/her own needs. He supported me when I had difficulties at work by laying out my options and evaluating the pros and cons. He also challenged my career choices by asking all the hard questions including what legacy I would like to leave behind. A mentor like him and others have shaped who I am as a business architect, a peer and a people leader.

What part of Global Architecture's mission inspires you?

Win as a team! Our ability to successfully deliver business, information and platform architecture planning and design requires breaking down silos and forming close partnerships with other teams. We rely on our business and technology teammates including product management, engineering, and program/portfolio management.

What up and coming tech trend excites you the most?

The progress in green technology is something that excites me the most. In recent weeks, we have seen the harsh effects of global warming. One of the challenges we are facing is minimizing carbon emissions. Technologies such as green hydrogen and decentralized power grids have the potential to decrease carbon emissions. Ideas like these give us a fighting chance to course correct, slow down the damage and keep the world livable for future generations.

What advice would you give to a woman considering a career in Nike tech? What do you wish you had known?

Have a Growth Mindset – Technology advances rapidly. There is always something new. Stay on top of the latest developments related (and adjacent) to your subject matter area. Learn from others. Networking is the key!
Find Mentors – A suitable mentor can encourage, challenge, and provide candid feedback. I have a group of mentors. Each one of them serves a different purpose.
Be Limitless – Keep an open mind on opportunities you haven’t considered. You never know where it will lead you.
Be Tenacious – Don’t talk yourself out of doing something. Give it a chance. If it doesn’t work, at least you tried.

I would tell the younger version of myself to “work, don’t worry.” During the early part of my career, I spent a lot of energy worrying about the tasks at hand instead of focusing on planning and executing the work. As a result, I put unnecessary pressure on myself and wasted time worrying.

Earlier this month, Jay Chandrashekaran, GAP Interim Leader, visited GAP teammates at the India Technology Center (ITC) in Bengaluru to support our DWO offense, a pillar under GT’s broader strategy.

The trip kicked off with a Town Hall meeting where ITC Leadership had the opportunity to share their thoughts with Jay, ask questions and collaborate on priorities for the coming fiscal year. The week continued with leadership meetings with CMT, ED&AI, Marketplace Supply Chain Technology (MSCT), Program Management, PICC, PL&M, Talent Acquisition, and HRPB. Jay also hosted skip-level meetings with each of the GAP-ITC sub-teams: IAM, PEGA, CSE, ADAPT, Advanced Compute, Data Warehouse, DBTF (Database Tech Foundations), Informatica, MAP, Business Intelligence Technology Foundation (BITF), and Mobile Analytics. This was followed by demos where teams shared the highlights of the work done at ITC during FY23.

The team also had the opportunity to come together during an All-Team Meeting to acknowledge GAP's accomplishments as one global organization driving Architecture, Foundational Platforms and our Platform Strategy initiative to serve the business and accelerate Nike's digital transformation. Annual Manager Access Reviews (MAR) Reduce Cybersecurity Risks
Revoking unnecessary access to sensitive resources and limiting users' privileges to the required minimum reduces cybersecurity risks and ensures all Nike employees have the right level of access, to the right resources, at the right time. Reviews were completed by 12,370 Nike managers who reviewed entitlement access for ~69,000, employees and their 2.6M entitlements.

BigID Platform Upgrade Enables Increased Profiling And Scanning Functionality

The BigID upgrade provides a significant increase to profiling and scanning functionality. Scanning speed improved and we gained the ability to specifically target S3 data for inventory scanning which is required for SEC & Privacy Inventory initiatives. This is utilized by EMEA ED&A and EDG teams.

Decommissioned DCBI Databases Lowers Operational Risk, Cost And Improves Governance
The Digital Commerce Business Intelligence (DCBI) Databases housed over 200 terabytes of data in Virginia and San Jose Data Centers. This multi-year and cross-team effort successfully decommissioned the databases, server cluster and storage which

lowers operational risk in case of failure and degradation, lowers infrastructure cost, optimizes service and improves governance.

Platform Shopping "Limited Launch" Enables Users To Leverage Existing Tech Solutions And APIs
4IAB users, Architects, Engineers will be able to search Global Catalog & Analysis for Platforms, Platform Capabilities, Tech Solutions, and APIs. This enables faster discovery and reuse of approved technology solutions in a uniform and consistent manner to deliver faster business results, prevent duplication, and reduce RTO.

The ODP team has successfully decommission all aspects of the Virginia Datacenter Digital Commerce Business Intelligence (VADC DCBI) Database, Server Cluster and storage. The databases and storage were no longer running on versions that could be upgraded or fixed, making them an operational risk in case of failure or degradation. The VADC DCBI shutdown will bring hard savings of ~$500K per annum in infrastructure costs.

The VADC DCBI databases, along with recently decommissioned San Jose DCBI databases, jointly housed data from all 15 sources of the traditional Digital Commerce databases. It was used for Business Intelligence and Analytics by over 90 different capability groups, enabling the lifecycle management of over 200 Terabytes of data.

During this multi-year effort, ODP team successfully migrated almost all use-cases and users to various Business Intelligence solutions, including PRBI (Oracle) and Enterprise Data & Artificial Intelligence (ED&AI) solutions. This migration allows for improved governance and standards for users to clearly understand usership and data lineage. It also gives customers access to optimized pathways to datasets along with other elevated tools as a result of utilizing more robust platforms.

Over the past two years, GAP Robotic Process Automation (RPA) team has been working to centralize and simplify the RPA platform ecosystem and standardize usage and adoption. The RPA platform allows users to automate tasks, accelerate delivery at scale and reduce overall cost while improving accuracy. With a centralized platform, teams will have access to out-of-the-box observability, Center of Practice (CoP) and new features without the burden of infrastructure and contract(s) maintenance.

As of May 31, EMEA and Japan teams have successfully migrated to the updated centralized platforms infrastructure with 100+ automations. With this migration, the EMEA team will be divesting in on-prem infrastructure, saving ~$60K per annum, as well as freeing up resources and leveraging the central SaaS platform with no additional cost. The Japan team’s migration to the central SaaS platform will also be saving ~$15k per annum by divesting their dedicated control rooms.

Kudos to the RPA platform team for their consistent support and guidance to validate, test and migrate these automations with minimal disruption! Through centralization, GAP is providing operational excellence to our customers while simplifying the overall Tech landscape.

What do we mean by simplifying our tech landscape?

Platform 4-in-a-box (4IAB) Owners of all 88 platforms play a huge role here – they are empowered and responsible for leading simplification of their platforms. The primary goal is to spend less budget on RTO, and focus more on delivering features. By everyone simplifying and standardizing, we move faster as a whole.

Why should we simplify across GT? What's the urgency and why does it matter?

Nike technology has grown at a very accelerated pace over the last 30 years, accumulating years worth of costly, duplicative, risky and outdated software along the way. More than 60% of GT’s time and money is spent in maintaining such a large and complex footprint, thereby reducing our ability to respond faster to new business initiatives.

Nike technology is at an inflection point that requires us to take this problem seriously and stop this explosive growth in complexity. This can only be done by prioritizing “defense“ over “offense“ as mentioned by our CEO John Donahoe, or else we will become a victim of our own unmanageable landscape.

This central approach of “defense“ is part of our Platform Strategy, which will be a 3-year journey of simplifying our landscape to a manageable size. Divestiture is centrally driven through the Global Platform Center of Excellence (GPCOE), which empowers and holds all platform owners accountable to drive simplification within every platform in a consistent manner.

What are the FY24 simplification opportunities and how were they determined?

The GPCOE team, in partnership with domains, identified a total of 15 divestiture opportunities across GT that will result in ~$15M year-over-year (YOY) savings beyond FY25. We went through extensive analysis and cross-organizational alignment exercises across hundreds of stakeholders over the 3-month period of AOP (Feb - May). These efforts were centered on the GT Teams' prioritization of these divestitures within FY24.

How will GT identify, prioritize and execute on these simplification divestitures?

GPCOE will lead this initiative across all 88 Nike Platforms for the next 3 years. We will follow a discover-plan-execute model in partnership with all Platform 4IAB Owners to drive continuous divestitures. An integrated team of representatives from several cross-functional areas within GT has been been formed to provide support and expertise for divestiture planning, prioritization and financials tracking.

Using the simplification framework, Platform 4IAB Owners will identify overlapping and duplicate tech solutions and will publish and enforce the list of recommended and non-recommended tech solutions to help drive standardization. This will also help Nike to make new investments on the forward-looking technology required for success of CDA.

What is needed from platform teams to make such a complex initiative successful?

Success of this enterprise-wide initiative hinges on the quality of data within Nike's Global Catalog , which will provide meaningful directional insights on

when-to-divest-which-software-and-why, all powered through automation and reporting. Therefore, it is fundamentally critical for all 88 Platform 4IAB Owners and their teams to manage, update and own their platform’s metadata in the Global Catalog on a quarterly basis. The good news is that it is very easy and low lift to maintain this data with trainings and support from GPCOE team.

How does platform simplification move the needle on digital acceleration for Nike? How does it help drive efficiency and productivity?

The heart of platform simplification is composability and reusability. Composable systems provide visibility into every platform's capabilities through APIs, which allows them to be combined and reused across platforms. The ability to reuse technology solutions leads to less time reinventing the wheel and maintaining duplicative solutions, and helps us achieve faster time-to-market and better business agility.

It will help to reduce complexity, improve agility, accelerate innovation, enhance security, lower operational drag and burden, and improve our customer responsiveness

Nike Streaming Platform 3.0 Released

It’s time for the next generation of the Nike Streaming Platform (NSP)! NSP is a fully managed central nervous system that flows relevant real-time data to Nike users at any time and place throughout the Enterprise. The GAP Near Real-Time Data (NRTD) team is excited to announce the limited release of NSP 3 in June. During the beta phase, the team will be working with a limited set of customers to identify improvements and collect feedback. The first release of NSP 3 includes a basic set of features designed to make streaming data with Kafka easier and more intuitive with a user-centric UI/UX. One of the key benefits is the ability to streamline Kafka’s technical complexity, giving our customers the flexibility to move data in near real-time at scale across multiple regions and clusters. The value it drives to our customers is scale, ease of use and reduced total cost of ownership (TCO).

The Business Automation team is introducing new Citizen Development capabilities on the Pega Business Process Management (BPM) Platform at the next GAP Tech Council on June 8th.

The Pega Platform hosts a suite of model driven application development tools that cover a range of capabilities: including web and mobile application development, business rules engine, business process modeling/execution, integrations. By utilizing Citizen Development through this platform, any non-technical Nike teammate is encouraged to create their own business application, using low-code/no-code platforms.

During the GAP Tech Council, attendees will get a general overview of Citizen Development and an opportunity to hear from our vendor Pega platform team. From there, the team will be soliciting opportunities for use cases to test in real-time sessions based on interest. The GAP BRE team, in partnership with Marketplace and Operations (MPO), has rolled out Inventory Protection capabilities within the Business Rule Engine (BRE) Platform, a critical piece in enabling SEC in successful inventory management.

As a part of the broader Inventory Protection initiative, the BRE component allows users more flexibility in sharing Inventory Models. This means that stakeholders at every stop in the supply chain have more ability to share, access and report vital real-time data with one another. This allows for better understanding of the broader inventory marketplace and equips the business to plan and react seamlessly to marketplace opportunities, challenges, and change.

The GAP Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Tech Foundation (AI/ML) TF team, in close collaboration with Enterprise Data & Analytics (ED&A) AI/ML Engineering, has onboarded 317 Data Scientists and Machine Learning Engineers to the new AI/ML 3.0 environment, also known as the SageMaker environment.

The AI/ML 3.0 environment allows GAP customer teams to build, train, deploy, serve, and observe Machine Learning models at scale. These environments are scoped to the Line of Business that they support. The goal of the AI/ML 3.0 Platform is to enable Nike AI/ML Product development teams using standard patterns and practices, integration with Global Technology tools, and visibility into cost and impact. AI/ML products currently drive upwards of $300M+ in annual revenue and efficiency gains across Nike.

So far, the team has enabled 8 lines of business and 60 teams across NA, APLA, EMEA, and Global within the AI/ML 3.0 platform. These efforts enable the consolidation and deprecation of legacy platforms Celect, Hyperflow, and Pathfinder; reducing costs and increasing platform efficiency. The AI/ML TF team will continue to accelerate AI/ML at Nike with infrastructure, automation, integrations, governance, observability tools, and more.

Modernization of Nike’s Digital Ordering System

The Online Data Platform team (ODP), in collaboration with the Marketplace Supply Chain Technology (MSCT) DOMS team, successfully completed the upgrade of Sterling Digital Order Management System (DOMS) and migration to AWS Cloud. DOMS supports Nike’s online ordering ecosystem, making it a vital piece of the Nike customer experience.

Nike is saving $4.5 Million year on year by moving DOMS to the cloud. This allows the application to continue to scale, enabling teams to build highly available and secure applications with advanced failover options to protect critical data and processes. The new cloud-based DOMS system provides powerful observability tools and metrics, which allows our teams to be constantly improving. In addition, The ODP team selected a new design that provides a cost avoidance of ~$500k per year.

This ties to our FY23/24 Platform Strategy to address critical tech risk across GT and modernize our applications in support of Nike’s digital growth, enabling faster time-to-market, agility, scalability, innovation, and cost effectiveness across Nike.

The Data Tech Foundation (DTF) team recently released the First and Second versions of Sole (Lakehouse on Databricks) and onboarded early adopters. Sole provides a prod environment provisioned with the core feature offerings of Databricks Lakehouse, configured to meet Nike's scale and complexity. This unlocks the first step in enabling data engineering teams to fully migrate data (pipeline inclusive) into Sole to support landscape simplification. This will drive cost savings, data producer and consumer productivity, and standardized practices across our entire Data Analytics user community.

Now that the baseline functionality for Sole has been delivered, the team is excited to move into the next phase of the program. Over the course of FY24, Data Engineering teams from across the enterprise will migrate their data, and the pipelines that produce them, out of legacy systems into Sole. While the Sole platform team supports this migration, they will also look to implement new features as they become available from Databricks.

This is not just a tool migration, but a fundamental change to how we approach data at Nike.

We recently had the opportunity to speak with Tom Good, Principal Engineer, Fulfillment Platform, to learn about how his team collaborates with GAP and utilizes Nike Streaming Platform (NSP). Tom has been vital to the implementation of NSP in Fulfillment and Logistics and has worked closely with GAP teams to influence the future of the platform.

Fun Fact: From his 10 years at Nike, Tom's favorite memory is seeing the US Women's National Team play a practice soccer match against the Portland Thorns at Ronaldo Field in at Nike WHQ!

What is your elevator pitch for what the Fulfillment Platform does for someone who may not know?

Once a consumer places an order with Nike, the Fulfillment Platform takes care of the entire fulfillment lifecycle, from order placement until delivery. This includes enriching the data with the necessary information to fulfill the order and sending it to the distribution center, store, or partner responsible for the physical fulfillment.

The platform also receives, correlates and stores updates related to fulfillment, such as fulfillment status (acknowledged, picked, packed, etc.), shipping confirmations, and carrier track and trace information. The Fulfillment Insights team maintains a searchable repository of all this fulfillment data and publishes updates back to the Order Management Domain to keep consumers informed about the status of their orders.

How long have you been working with NSP?

We began working with NSP in 2020.

What have been some of the challenges and benefits of being an early adopter of NSP?

Since our developers are not experts in Kafka, it was challenging to optimize NSP for the best performance and throughput for our specific use cases. Fortunately, we received a lot of help and guidance from the CSE team, who assisted us in resolving these issues.

How does NSP and GAP teams support your ability to better serve Nike consumers?

By providing a reliable platform for doing cross-AWS-account asynchronous messaging that has become a key part of what we do.

What does Nike Streaming Platform enable you to do today, that you couldn’t do before?

We already had asynchronous publish/subscribe patterns through SNS/SQS, but NSP allows us to easily use this pattern across multiple AWS accounts. We have seen an increase in the number of AWS accounts due to the need for separate China infrastructure and also because of various Nike platforms moving into their own Waffle Iron accounts. This makes cross-account messaging critical for us.

What business opportunities or upcoming tech trends are you excited to explore in the future with NSP or beyond?

The tech trend that interests me the most is the rise of ChatGPT and other Large Language Model-based Artificial Intelligence. I think this has the potential to make us all much more productive, both at work and in other aspects of our lives.

Can you share a little bit about your team and what a typical day for you is like?

My team consists of enterprise information architects, each of which is aligned in different areas across Nike (i.e., product, customer, consumer). We sit between the business and technology and serve as subject matter experts on the end-to-end story of data – from when it is collected, all the way to utilization. This data is essentially any information that is captured in a system or application (i.e., new customers, shipments, marketing, and more) and my team creates the architecture of that data, ensuring that it is defined, packaged, organized, and accessible to the various teams that need it. Day to day, my team is integrated into and supporting various initiatives, and then we come back to share information and best practices. My role is to drive our information architecture strategy, build the team, support and mentor them and find opportunities to grow and shift.

Did you always know that working in technology was what you wanted to do? How did you decide to go into your field?

I didn’t always know I would be working in technology and have always been much more of a business-oriented person. In college, I took a programming class and my first position at Nike was as a user systems specialist which helped me learn what data was and how it was used. Since then, I have always had an affinity towards data and information as it's tied to the movement and betterment of the business. I am excited by innovation and gravitate towards opportunities to develop what that positive change process could look like.

Is there a professional lesson/accomplishment that has most impacted your career?

The biggest lesson I learned was when I began managing people and leading teams. I thought that I needed to be the person that knew everything and had a whole landscape in my head with all the answers. But as I progressed, I realized there is no way to know everything. Instead, you must rely on tools and tactics that promote groupthink. Once you learn to ask the right questions rather than just having all the answers, you’ll have a much better result.

What part of GAP's mission inspires you?

I am inspired by where we are headed, specifically with our Platform Strategy. By focusing on composable units that align with our business model and simplifying our data systems, we are making a huge change for Nike. Data is often seen as an afterthought, but here we are shifting that paradigm and beginning to focus on data first and as a key part of the architecture. By beginning with what data is owned and managed, how it should be shared, and what processes are best for this, we are creating a strategy that is clean and much more efficient.

What advice would you give to a woman considering a career in Nike tech? What do you wish you had known?

To keep an open mind and listen. Be ready for change – it’s constant at Nike and it’s okay. Embrace the concept of different perspectives. Keep learning. Find a network of peeps, and one or more mentors to bounce ideas around with.

This work represents a tremendous effort across the architecture team to summarize architecture strategy for all 12 GT transformational initiatives. It also supports Executive Leadership Team (ELT) discussions regarding the technology portfolio and influences the overall direction and speed of tech decision-making at Nike.

What is your elevator pitch for what the SAP-DI team does for someone who may not know?

The SAP Data Intelligence (SAP-DI) team utilizes SAP source data and through a host of streaming processes and methods, egresses or moves out that data for non-SAP functions like advanced analytics and data science. Any time the SAP data changes, the SAP Change Data Capture (CDC) is triggered, allowing for the new/delta data packets to flow downstream to be used by a larger number of end consumers.

The data flows through the Nike Streaming Platform (NSP) during this process, where it can be delivered to teams and functions that need it without hands-on management from the SAP DI team. This data transference allows Nike to better understand its own business, both internally and externally and provides insight into avenues for growth.

What does Nike Streaming Platform enable you to do today, that you couldn’t do before?

The way we use NSP is a new implementation for Nike’s Strategic Enterprise Capabilities (SEC). It allows us to push all the data packages (i.e financial data; material data; supply chain data; master data; customer data and configuration data) we collect from SAP into one system, where they can be managed and delivered to multiple users.

With NSP, we can “fire and forget” our data and know that it will reach its destination without direct management from our team. NSP allows us to do our work faster and more efficiently, with far fewer resources needed to manage consumers.

What is the coolest thing you’ve been able to do with NSP for Nike SAP-DI?

With NSP, we are able to deliver around 25 million rows of data across 250 pipelines on an average day. We triple that amount during the end of the month. It is a cool feature that we can move that much data efficiently to all the destinations that use it.

What business opportunities are you excited to explore in the future with NSP?

As an early adopter of NSP, we are still understanding all the capabilities and potential use cases. This gives us an opportunity to influence the future of NSP as it continues to grow and improve. Currently, we are working with smaller-sized data packets that are delivered to many destinations. We hope to someday increase the sizes of these packets to better match the source volumes and remove customization necessary for NSP. We are looking forward to working closely with GAP teams on this and other future NSP functional enhancements.

What is your favorite feature/capability and what do you use it for?

My favorite capability is the self-service that is enabled through NSP. It has a very well thought out suite of tools that my team can leverage and use to build out automation in our processes. We can utilize the self-service for deployments and builds, along with faster resolutions to discrepancies or issues that may arise.

GPCOE has been partnering with multiple domains and teammates to evolve Nike's global platform ecosystem. Four new platforms were recently added to our ecosystem by GT tech teams, making it a total of 87 platforms that house 600+ cohesive capabilities, implemented by 2,700+ tech solutions.

Q3 Platform Strategy Update

In Q2, the Platform Transformation team engaged with GT leaders to review the game plan for our multi-year platform strategy. They also completed a refresh of tagging 4-in-a-box (4IAB) platform owner names across the Nike ecosystem for greater transparency within our Nike Global Catalog .

In Q3, we will be activating platform 4IAB sessions to explain principles, practices and responsibilities related to global platform ownership. We will also be launching platform training and education to provide the knowledge and skills needed to implement the next phase of physical platform transformation. Empowering platform owners for the next phase of Platform Strategy

Several capabilities have been rolled out to better enable platform owners to manage their platforms, unlock strategic analysis and platform discoverability, and drive a consistent platform ownership model.

New divestiture templates, simplification criteria and support for new maturity attributes, enabling 4IAB owners to manage platforms and tech solutions in a standardized and governed way with the Global Catalog & Analysis Platform .
The Nike Platform Engine UI is live for early adopters on Platform Console, allowing customers to deploy containerized stateless workloads seamlessly across multiple regions for greater speed and agility.
Service Platform PCS Service registry is up and running, allowing platform capability owners to register APIs in the platform ecosystem. Beyond platform and platform capabilities already available and published in the Nike Global Catalog , we are now able to activate the logical stitching and composability of our ecosystems – available using PCS CLI, or directly from Platform Console .

The GAP Communications team is excited to spotlight Malgorzata (Gosia) Surkont, who serves as the Director of GAP Poland Technology Center (PTC) in Gdańsk, Poland.

We recently c aught up with Gosia, a lover of biographies, crime stories, historic European castles, all to the beat of her favorite song, "Whatever it Takes" by Imagine Dragons. Gosia is one of the newer members of the GAP leadership team and describes her Nike career and personal values in three words: integrity, belonging, mastery. With 20+ years of experience in IT working in variety of positions, she brings crucial expertise and mentorship strengths to her work at Nike. Read more to learn insights from her experience in tech, and what motivates her in her role.

What experiences prepared you for your new role?

I think my entire professional path has prepared me for where I am and would say that with confidence about each of my roles. This is probably the case for everybody. The question is whether the experiences we have are sufficient and I'm sure that is not the case because each new role comes with new responsibilities and new experiences.

What have been some of the biggest lessons as the GAP PTC teams have grown and matured? Any advice you have for other teams who are just starting their DW journey in PTC?

I would start by hiring a manager or someone who will be responsible for coordination with stakeholders. It is also great to define an asynchronous model of communication and to find a way to understand differences. The biggest lesson was to getting to know myself better in new conditions which were very challenging. I hope that it will help me self-manage better in the future.

Looking back on how you’ve grown and led the GAP PTC teams, what are you most proud of or what has been the toughest challenge you and the team have had to overcome?

I'm most proud of the people that I have the honor to work with and how they contribute to our deliverables in different and unique ways. I am grateful that while we have different opinions, we also appreciate those differences and can laugh and learn together .

There are challenges that come with a hybrid work environment. Before the pandemic, Zoom was used only to communicate between different locations with different time zones. Right now, we use it throughout the day and it can be tiring. There are also some challenges when working in DWO and I hope that we can learn to work more effectively.

Looking ahead, what are you most excited about for your teams ?

I am most excited to learn new things and a new way to work in a new role. I would love to be able to scale my teams and their culture .

What advice would you give to junior female engineers just starting their careers who aspire to follow in your career footsteps?

I’m an advocate for self-awareness. Understanding your strengths, weaknesses, communication styles, and values is, in my opinion, important for everyone. Being female in tech is not easy for many reasons and it is worth being aware of them. For example, women are subject to different standards. There are several interesting books about it, like "Lean in" by Sheryl Sandberg. It is also good to talk to other women, which helps not only to build awareness, but also to find support. For me, the most important thing is to have people I can trust and who help me in moments of doubt and when I underestimate myself. Sometimes you come across these people in the least expected places which can be very cool.

On Dec. 8, the Gap Tech Council presented the Near Real-Time Data (NRTD) Foundational Platform Strategy and highlighted the story of the Nike Streaming Platform. The NRTD team is working on the latest iteration of Streaming Platform (NSP 3.0) and shared the benefits it will bring to customers.

NRTD’s vision is to democratize data by providing an easy-to-use self-service tooling and infrastructure to ingest, transform, manage, process, and serve data in real-time with seamless integrations to data governance, privacy, catalog and other platforms.

The NRTD platform strategy is to:

Establish a global platform through the unification of disparate tools
Provide intuitive UI/UX to drive simplicity and ease of use
Make platform vendor agnostic over time
Move toward open source to optimize the cost
Scale, optimize and increase reliability

The comms team recently caught up with Erin, one of the newer members of the GPaaS leadership team, to learn insights from her 20 years of experience in tech, and what motivates her in her new role...

What have been some of the critical inflection points in your career that have made you the leader you are today?

As a leader today, I am focused on people, teams, priorities, and delivery. Through learning Lean methodologies (the basis for Agile/Scrum), my eyes were opened to the power of inclusion and excellence. I witnessed that those closest to the work know the best solutions to their problems.

In a previous role, I had to hire 20+ people each year. Excellence and rapid turnaround times were a must. Through experimentation and intention, I found that when we casted a wider net, we got better, more diverse talent. Again and again, I find diverse teams are the most effective and fun.

At Nike, I joke that I got my Masters in Alignment. As leaders, we are able to deliver amazing results when we are aligned and focused on common priorities.

What advice would you give to junior female engineers just starting their careers, who aspire to follow in your career footsteps?

First, I’m so glad you are here. Second, my advice would be to figure out your passion – work, team, process, side projects – whatever lights you up. Find out what makes you thrive and find or cultivate that around you. Because when you are passionate and thriving, you are bringing your best and you are enjoying your life. It might take you time to figure this out. It may change over time. That’s ok. It’s all part of the journey.

Why is Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) such a critical enabler of high-performing teams?

DEI unlocks so much potential in people and teams. When people are seen, included, and invested in their teams and their work, they bring all of themselves – their unique perspective, experiences, skills, and knowledge. I’ve witnessed this level-up the joy, skill, and effectiveness of the whole team. Ultimately, we get better results.

As a GAP DEI champion, I’m focused on inclusive hiring for ETWs and FTEs. I’ll be working across Nike, GT, and GAP to provide managers with successful methods for quickly hiring diverse, highly talented teams, as well as learn from all of you.

Why were you interested in pursuing a role in GAP? What part of GAP’s mission do you connect with the most?

Platform strategy – it’s a vision that I’m excited about and want to be part of. I think it will be the game changer for Nike. Sign me up!

Looking ahead, what are you most excited about for your teams?

I’m excited about delivering on the vision and promise of platforms. Service Platform is a crucial part of that. I’m excited about growing a winning team. I know we will have a big impact on Nike and our athletes.

Did you know that across Nike, Inc. we have over 300 Robotic Process Automations (RPA) , saving Nike hundreds of thousands of hours in manual data entry and data error processing year over year? Denise Van der Linden-Morris explains how her team benefits from RPA, and how it helps Nike employees like her focus on their most meaningful work.

What does your team do?

Our Robotic Process Automation group is named House Atreides — inspired by the science fiction novel and series Dune. I oversee all business automation (RPA, BPM, Process Mining) as well as Finance operational business planning (IBM Planning Analytics) platforms as a lead Technical Product Manager (TPM). I'm at the front-end determining together with (global) architecture if a business problem is a suitable use case for RPA or not.

How do you use RPA — Robotic Process Automation?

We prefer not to use RPA as a standalone but within seamless end-to-end flows. The orchestration is executed by another automation team called Rebel Alliance (also science fiction inspired).

What does RPA enable you to do today that you couldn’t do before?

It is automating repetitive tasks which were previously executed manually by our finance stakeholders. This allows finance stakeholders to close the books without having to work overtime at month’s end, spending their freed-up time advising other business departments on investments and reporting.

How is RPA helping your team (and Nike) better connect with consumers in a more personalized way?

In Customer Finance we use RPA in the back office. Because of RPA, our back office is more efficient, quickly handling claims or reprint requests, which helps them better serve our Customer Finance stakeholders -- and ultimately customers. RPA for CF is also improving the experience for our employees, so they remain engaged. It serves our vendors and elite athletes, too, so they remain focused on our consumers.

What have been some of the challenges and benefits of being an early adopter of RPA?

Our team built the first bot at Nike overall. Although the business already saw the benefit of RPA, we had to convince tech platform teams to support it as it's a band-aid (not a NorthStar solution) from an architecture/platform strategy point-of-view.

What business opportunities are you excited to explore in the future with RPA?

RPA could be leveraged anywhere where interim band-aids are desired until more permanent solutions can be prioritized. For example, we could leverage RPA to make the onboarding experience for our new tech hires more seamless, until Workday offers a more permanent solution.

GAP enables a more resilient future for Nike e-commerce Platforms

This month we hit another important milestone for Global Technology. For the first time in Nike’s history, we are able to reroute traffic during a simulated regional cloud failure, ensuring business continuity and more reliable consumer experiences. Through the collaborative efforts of Architecture , GPaaS , Tech Ops and CMT , Phase One of Nike’s High Availability Disaster Recovery (HA/DR) strategy was rolled out – the ability to confidently Failover to US-West in the event of an outage, moving towards production ready for Holiday 2023.

Global Architecture developed standardized, simplified and modernized DNS and routing designs, ensuring full validation of Nike's DR site and creating a more resilient future for Nike e-commerce platforms. Additionally, the GPaaS Online Database Platform team modernized the dependent Oracle database instances into Waffle Iron accounts and enabled near-real-time replication and automation for failover to US- West.

A special shout out to GAP Architects, GPaaS, Tech Ops, CMT and PMs who worked tirelessly and in lockstep to hit this important milestone. Teamwork is at the heart of our culture and this a great example of how we Win as a Team to enable a strong foundation for Global Technology.

Following the C4C Nike App Alpha go-live in China, GAP successfully supported the launch of Nike app fast follow: SNKRS, Nike dot Com and WeChat in China. GAP teams operated at an unprecedented speed and scale, delivering flawless functionality. Not only did the command centers close much earlier, but GC GAP received no launch related requests or escalations.

In addition, we hit another important milestone in October – the launch of Korea-on-platform. GAP resolved all launch issues with speed and efficiency, enabling GT to hit this important milestone. Congrats to GAP teams for delivering speed and efficiency, enabling Nike to seamlessly connect to GC and Korea athletes* and consumers!

Celebrating our platform progress and next steps

Two years ago, we embarked on a platform journey to address our complex technology landscape with the launch of our new Global Platform Strategy. Since then, we have focused on building an ecosystem of platforms that provides the agility, faster time-to-market, scalability and innovation needed for the Consumer Direct Acceleration offense. We have made significant progress and gained great momentum in our platform journey, including:

Global Platform Catalog : We defined the global platform ecosystem with clear ownership, accountability and discoverability for all capabilities and related technology solutions.

Global Platform Ecosystem : We evolved our organization to align people, strategy and technology based on platforms, so that we can optimize execution and delivery.

Platform Operating Model : We established a new model that provides clear norms, roles and guiding principles for teammates in Global Tech and in the business to work together more effectively.

What's Next

This transformation is already yielding benefits, such as simplification, ease of engagement, greater alignment and faster discovery. Now that we have a strong framework in place, it’s time for our organization to begin leveraging it based on the Platform Operating Model , starting in Q1. We are also starting the physical platform transformation, evolving our technology solutions into stitchable, composable, reusable and integrated platforms that align with our guiding principles and standards.

As we continue to advance this work in FY23, the Platform Center of Excellence (COE) will target engagements with nine specific platforms to help them move toward greater composability and technical excellence. In H1, you can expect to see roadshows, technical training, platform architecture and engineering handbooks and the next GA release of the Service Platform’s Nike Platform Engine (NPE) for microservices.

NEW: Nike Data Subject Area Map, FY22 Q3 Release

The Nike Data Subject Area Map is a combined view of the data produced and consumed across Nike. It represents all data and definition of data, unbiased of any system or application. The Map unites, formalizes, and represents the things important to our organization, and is a framework for how our business communicates and collaborates linguistically across business functions.

How is the Nike Data Subject Area Map Used?

The Nike Data Subject Area Map enables data discovery across our complex landscape. It is used by strategic initiatives to ensure information inputs and outputs align to the Nike business language. It provides the foundation for data governance and stewardship, and facilitates scoping and impact analysis. Finally, it aligns to our Information Architecture and Designs that drive naming and usage of business data within all our technical solutions.

The Nike Data Subject Area Map is the data equivalent of the Nike Enterprise Capability Map. The Capability Map is a process centric view of what we do to deliver business value. The Information, Business, Domain, and Foundation Architecture teams are collaborating to define how Business Objects will be incorporated into Nike's Global Platform Strategy.

Introducing Nike Platform Engine
April 28, 2022

Within the past year, the newly created Service Platform team set out to build Nike Platform Engine (NPE) to simplify and accelerate how development teams at Nike operate and manage microservices at-scale. Leveraging best practices for cloud architecture and container orchestration, NPE delivers out-of-the-box Nike integrations that will provide GAP customers DevSecOps readiness on day one.

Key Features

Federated model

We provision your environments and deploy your services directly into your own AWS account with a least permission model.

Control plane in AWS 6-pack region

To operate as close as possible to your workloads, we are available in NA, Europe, and APLA regions.

Rich developer tooling

Based on your use cases, you will be able to interact with NPE using our API, CLI, SDK, Console, and Terraform modules.

Bring your own container images

Stateless applications and services can be deployed and scaled very easily - just point us towards your Docker image.

Secure by default

We have built-in integration with CIS-focused TechOps services, such as Cerberus, Waffle-Iron, IDLocker, and Venafi, making our solution SecOps-compliant out of the box.

Observable by default

Our control plane and customer runtime operations are properly logged and forwarded to well-known observable stacks for additional aggregation and analysis.

What is Nike Platform Engine?

Nike Platform Engine (NPE) is a managed service to simplify the management and operations of composable microservices leveraging and orchestrating container and server-less environments at scale.

What's next?

White Glove Program

During the Restricted Change Window (RCW) and until early February 2022, we are introducing a white glove program to ramp-up new and existing customers to NPE. This will allow us to bring additional value as quickly as possible while collecting additional feedback. Please contact us via our intake form. We will reach out first to our GAP early adopters to setup onboarding kick-off and working sessions to ensure they get the best experience and support possible during this time.

Tech Talk: Nike Platform Strategy, Part 3

Chris Kasten, VP, Global Architecture & PaaS (GAP) , kicked off with a refresh on what Platform Strategy is and why it continues to be a winning game plan for exponential growth. He shared how GAP is driving Nike’s ecosystem of composable platforms and services to enable faster time-to-market, scalability, and innovation.

Florin Dragu, Sr. Director, GAP TPM, provided examples of how Platform Capabilities are implemented by Technology Solutions to deliver business value. The goal is to stitch together platforms across GT to create experiences and business value chains, unlocking Nike’s capabilities to connect more directly with consumers around the globe. He also clarified how the two types of products in GT – Experience Products and Platform Products – work together.

Kaushik Katira, Sr. Director, Global Platform COE , explained Nike’s current status in this 5-year platformization journey, and how it improves our day-to-day work. Global Technology is now structured and based on a world of platforms with clear platform ownership, alignment of people, technology, and strategy to deliver for Nike.

4-in-a-box Platform Accountability Model

One key takeaway from the session is that all ~85 Nike Platforms now have a consistent 4-in-a-box platform accountability model. Each 4-in-a-box has an Engineering Platform Owner, Platform Architect, Platform TPM, and Platform Program Manager, assigned by the related GT VP leader, who are accountable for leading the global vision, strategy, implementation and operation of a platform, its globally unique Platform Capabilities, and related Technology Solutions. Each 4-in-a-box platform leadership role is empowered to drive, lead, and make decisions in their respective functional areas. The 4-in-a-box for every platform in GT can be easily found in the Nike Platform Catalog .

In the final section, the GAP team discussed how our Platform Strategy journey will reshape existing and new Technology Solutions to create the platforms of the future following the GT Evolution. Next steps include rolling out an updated platformatization engagement model, building on the common foundational capabilities of the Service Platform and measuring our progress through a set of standardized indexes.
